Winter Motorhome Essentials: Must-Have Accessories for Cold Weather Travel

Buying a motorhome and heading off on an adventure during winter might seem thrilling - but it could be quite daunting at the same time. How will you keep you and your passengers warm during what is, traditionally, the coldest season? In this edition of our blog we focus on some of the winter motorhome essentials that’ll ensure everyone’s toasty on the road.

The Right Accessories for Winter Motorhoming

With the right preparation and the right accessories, winter motorhoming can be very rewarding, no matter how low the temperatures dip.

Heated Water Hose

In motorhomes, one of the most common dangers during winter is frozen pipes. A heated water hose is an absolute must for anyone planning to keep their motorhome connected to a mains water supply during cold weather. These hoses are insulated and often come with a built-in heating element to prevent the water inside from freezing, so you’ll have running water no matter what the temperature outside is.

  • Stops pipes and water tanks from freezing
  • Provides a steady water supply throughout winter
  • Easy to store, easy to use

Insulated Window Covers

Keeping cold out and warm in is an essential during the winter. Thermal screens or insulated window covers are designed to fit over your motorhome's windows and using them will help maintain an internal temperature that's more comfortable than if you just left the windows uncovered. Not only do they keep the cold at bay, but these covers can also help reduce the condensation inside the motorhome.

  • Reduces heat loss through windows
  • Helps to prevent condensation and dampness
  • Blocks out light, for better quality sleep

Winter Tyres

Winter tyres are a game-changer when roads become icy. They’re specifically designed to perform better in cold conditions, giving superior traction. Winter tyres are made from a special rubber compound that remains flexible in low temperatures, which improves the grip and handling. They will have a longer lifespan when used in cold weather than ‘normal’ tyres would.

  • Improved safety
  • Enhanced traction and handling

Electric Heater

Although almost all modern motorhomes come with built-in heating systems, they can still sometimes struggle to heat up the vehicle quickly enough or adequately enough during the coldest weather. An electric heater (or portable fan heater) will give an extra boost of warmth on particularly chilly nights. Many of them come with their own thermostat, to regulate the temperature and ensure you don’t overheat the space, and there are energy-efficient options available.

  • Adds extra warmth
  • Compact, easy to store and easy to use

Battery Insulation

In cold weather, a vehicle battery can lose charge much more quickly than in warmer months. Battery insulation will help to protect your motorhome’s power supply by keeping the temperature around your battery stable. This will reduce the risk of freezing, and of the motorhome unexpectedly losing power.

  • Prevents battery failure
  • Helps to maintain battery efficiency
  • Protects against extreme cold

Water Tank Heaters and Insulation

Water tanks can easily freeze in winter – and if this happens you could be left without water until they thaw. Using a water tank heater or insulation blanket will provide warmth around the tank, ensuring it remains functional during cold nights. Insulation blankets are usually lightweight and easy to install, and they provide a layer of protection from the winter’s freezing temperatures.

  • Stop water tanks from freezing
  • Ensure water supply stays available
  • Easy to install and remove

Dehumidifier

Winter can lead to a high-level moisture inside your motorhome, especially because you will be cooking, showering, and breathing in a relatively small and enclosed space. Using a dehumidifier will help you to remove excess moisture from the air, thereby reducing the chance of condensation and mould growth. It’ll be particularly useful when you’re travelling in areas with high humidity or frequent rain.

  • Reduces damp and condensation
  • Prevents mould growth
  • Improves air quality

Sleeping Bags

For cold nights, having a good sleeping bag that is rated for winter temperatures is a good idea. Thermal sleeping bags have been specially designed to retain heat.

  • Keeps you warm during cold nights
  • Reduces heat loss
  • Light and easy to pack

Winter Cover

A motorhome cover which has been designed specifically for the winter weather can protect your vehicle from the elements, including snow, ice, and rain. These covers are made from breathable materials so prevent moisture build-up at the same time as providing insulation. A winter cover is particularly useful for longer stays, or when your motorhome is parked up for an extended period of time.

  • Protection from snow, ice and rain
  • Prevent the build-up of interior frost or damp
  • Keeps your motorhome clean and protected

With the right accessories, winter motorhome trips are not out of the question – and can be as comfortable and enjoyable as those you might take during the warmer months of the year.
