Reasons to Love Preloved Motorhomes and Caravans

We all like buying brand new. The idea that something has been used is often associated with the idea it could be run down and neglected, particularly when it comes to a second hand vehicle. However, in most cases, this is simply not true. Today, the used motorhome market is booming - and for good reason. With the majority of preloved motorhomes and caravans, you’ll find that they have been extremely well looked after, with regular upkeep and servicing. Unlike cars, which have the tendency to be driven into the ground until they break down, motorhomes are used much less regularly – and significantly more care is taken by owners given the larger investment that has made in them. Used caravans are also a great buy – with no engine, there’s no need to even think about mileage!

There are so many benefits to buying a second-hand motorhome or caravan…

1.   Value for money

Given that buying a motorhome or caravan is a considerable investment and one that you may have spent quite some time saving for, it’s important to get great value for money. Buying from used guarantees you just that. Given that many used vehicles have been the pride and joy of previous owners, you’ll find them in nearly new condition for just a fraction of the price!

VAT is also considerably less on a preloved campervan or motorhome. Whilst VAT on a new motorhome sits at around 20%, used vehicles are exempt from this kind of payment. Though you may not even consider this prior to making a purchase, it really is an added bonus!

2.   Slower depreciation rate

Following a purchase from brand new, the value of a vehicle will depreciate quickly. In contrast, the value of a vehicle which has already passed through the hands of an owner or two, will depreciate much more slowly, simply because of the higher price tag that comes with buying from new. As a general rule, you can expect motorhomes to depreciate in value by around 20% after their first year, and approximately 30% after the first three years in total.

For many buyers, it’s important to see how they can get a return on their investment when they come to sell their vehicle in the future. With a used motorhome or caravan, you can expect to get a large percentage of this investment back. This is especially true if you keep your motorhome great condition, and don’t use it as an everyday vehicle.

3.   High specification

When purchasing a motorhome from brand new, you have the option to choose extra add-ons or mod-cons such as hook-up cables, audio systems or LED lighting. These can be an unwelcome cost for some buyers. With a used motorhome, however, the first or even second owners may have already incorporated these additional mod-cons into the vehicle. It’s thus quite likely that buying second hand gets you all the mod-cons you could ever need to enjoy life out on the road, without having to worry about extra payment.

4.   Initial problems resolved

As you may already know, buying from new doesn’t guarantee a problem free experience. All vehicles can be subject to ‘teething’ problems during the initial period of use. Buying second hand most often means that any of these issues have been resolved by the vehicle’s first owners, allowing you to get out and enjoy your motorhome to its full capacity.
