Yorkshire people might tell you that it’s the county that has everything – in fact, they would definitely tell you! Who are we to argue? After all, we’re Yorkshire people too! It’s a huge and homely part of northern England, where the countryside is breath taking, the cities are buzzing, and the culture is ‘salt of the earth’. When living the motorhome life you’d do very well indeed if you were to explore Yorkshire.
With so much to see and do, it would be simple for us to compile a list of the best places you could visit. But what about places to park, pitch up and stay while you’re on your travels? What are the best campsites in Yorkshire? We’ve thought about this over a cup of tea and come up with three suggestions we think fit the bill. There are loads of others which could have made this list, of course, but here’s your favourite motorhome dealer in Yorkshire’s ‘three off the tee’ to get you started.
1. York Caravan Park
You have to start with the ‘capital’, don’t you? Although nearby Leeds is often considered the hub of Yorkshire, and is certainly a hive of business activity, the county actually gets its name from this ancient and excellent city. York is a haven for tourism, in part due to its historic value including the world famous York Minster. There are also loads of great galleries, music venues and bars and restaurants to keep you occupied and entertained. Having a motorhome holiday centred around this fantastic place is a good move – and York Caravan Park offers you a great base for your stay.
- York Caravan Park is an adults only park just two miles out from the Minster (which is central to the city), so it’s in prime position. There’s a bus service from the caravan park to the city centre which runs every half an hour and takes only ten minutes.
- Fifty-five hardstanding pitches offer added privacy by the hedging around three sides, so you’ll feel safe, secure and won’t feel overlooked.
- The facilities are good – each caravan or motorhome pitch has electricity, fresh water and waste water hook-up, as well as a lighting bollard. There are privacy rooms with a shower, toilet and sink in each, a disabled suite, free Wi-Fi and a dog walk area. In addition, should you not fancy going into York itself, there’s an on-site fishing lake and picnic area!
2. Scarborough Camping and Caravanning Club Site
If a city more inland is not quite your thing and you want to spend time at the coast, Scarborough is the place! There’s plenty to see and do, with sea activities, sandy beaches, castle ruins, museums, the open air theatre and an RSPB nature reserve all bidding for your valuable leisure time. There’s also plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants to keep you well fed and watered, as well as parks to enjoy the great outdoors.
- Scarborough Camping and Caravanning Club Site is just a bus ride away from the town, with buses running every 30 minutes until early evening. The park is sited a mere five minutes’ walk from a secluded beach on the dramatic coastline north of the town.
- The club site has everything all ages of visitors could possibly need – including a recreation room, playground, football pitch and a huge national park – plus that all important dog exercise area. Facilities include showers, toilets, parent and baby rooms, washing machines and a well-stocked shop.
- There are hardstanding pitches available at various sizes, so it’s best to check the park’s website to make sure that the size you’ll require for your motorhome is available when you plan to make the trip.
3. Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park
This three hundred-year-old historic country house received a resurgence in popularity in the 1980s. This was due to its use as a location in TV series Brideshead Revisited, a masterpiece adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel – and more recently in the series Bridgerton. It’s open to the public for viewing, with more than quarter of a million people descending on Castle Howard every year to view it’s stunning attractions and cafes.
Nearby Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park offers stunning views across the whole estate and is sure to please. Positioned in beautiful countryside next to the estate’s Great Lake, the park offers a truly relaxing environment for holidaymakers. As well as a village of static caravans for rent, there are hardstanding pitches for caravan and motorhome owners, with electric hook-up. On-site facilities include an amenities block which has toilets, showers, sinks and hair dryers, as well as washing machines and tumble dryers available.
Why not store your vehicle with us?
We think these three parks will ‘start you off’ in your quest to discover more of Yorkshire’s beauty. Of course, you’re not able to travel all of the time, and so you might need somewhere to put your motorhome while you’re ‘off the road’ and have gone back to your ‘normal life’ for a bit. Here at Wandahome, we have spacious facilities to offer motorhome storage, Yorkshire, at our base in South Cave.
Our large, purpose-built motorhome, campervan and caravan storage facility is open 361 days per year and has the capacity for over 850 vehicles. It’s been built to the Caravan Storage Site Owners Association's (CaSSOA) Gold Standard and is CCTV monitored 24 hours a day. There are controlled entrance and exit points, so your caravan or motorhome will always be secure.
