How Much is Motorhome Insurance?

Owning a motorhome is a wonderful way to explore the open road and experience the freedom of travel with your friends and family. However, just like a vehicle, your motorhome needs insurance to protect you against potential risks and unexpected costs. In this blog we are going to explore the factors that influence motorhome insurance and provide you with a better understanding of what to expect.

Factors That Influence the Cost of Motorhome Insurance

1.   Type and Value of the Motorhome

The type and value of your motorhome are significant factors. A high-end, luxury motorhome will cost more to insure than a smaller, older model. Insurers will consider the vehicle's market value, age, and condition when determining premiums.

2.   Storage Location

Where you store your motorhome when it's not in use can impact your insurance costs. Keeping it in a secure location, such as a locked garage or a specialised motorhome storage facility, can reduce the risk of theft or damage which should then reduce your costs. However, if you store your motorhome on your driveway for example or a shared car park, then your insurance will likely be higher.

3.   Driving Experience

Like most vehicle insurances, your age and years of experience will play a part in the costs for your insurance. Experienced motorhome drivers with clean driving records are likely to receive lower premiums compared to new drivers or those with a history of accidents or claims.

Types of Motorhome Insurance

There are various types of motorhome insurance available, each designed to meet different needs and preferences.

a)    Comprehensive Motorhome Insurance

This is the most extensive type of coverage available; it protects you against a wide range of risks and incidents. These include, accidental damage, fire damage, weather damage and third-party liability. Comprehensive insurance is ideal if you are wanting maximum protection and peace of mind, however it is the most expensive option due to the depth of coverage included.

b)    Third-Party, Fire and Theft Insurance

This insurance offers a middle ground between basic and comprehensive coverage. This policy typically includes third-party liability which covers damage or injury caused to others, fire damage which protects against damage caused by fire and theft, which covers the loss if your motorhome is stolen.

c)    Third-Party Only Insurance

Third-party only insurance is the minimum legal requirement for motorhomes in the UK, it protects against claims for damage or injury you cause to other people, vehicles or property. Third-party only insurance does not cover you from any damage to your motorhome, theft or fire damage. It is the most affordable option but offers the least protection, making it suitable for those on a tight budget or with older, less valuable motorhomes.

Additional Add-Ons

When you have chosen which insurance type you are going to go with, you can then choose whether you want to add any additionals.

a)    European Cover

If you plan to travel with your motorhome across Europe, then we recommend adding European cover to your policy. This ensures that you are protected while driving in other European countries. Be sure to check the specifics to make sure it doesn’t limit the days you are covered for.

b)    Breakdown Cover

Breakdown cover provides you with assistance if your motorhome breaks down while on the road. This can include roadside repairs, towing services and sometimes accommodation or transportation if your motorhome cannot be fixed immediately.

c)    Personal Belongings Cover

Motorhomes often carry a lot of personal belongings, especially when you are going away for long periods of time with your friends or family. Personal belongings cover protects these items against theft, loss or damage.

d)    Key Cover

Key cover protects you against the cost of having to replace or repair keys and locks if your motorhome keys are lost, stolen or damaged.

e)    Legal Expenses Cover

Legal expenses cover helps with the cost of legal proceedings following an accident that wasn’t your fault. This can include the cost of pursuing compensation for personal injury or recovering uninsured losses.

How Much is Motorhome Insurance?

On average, the typical cost of motorhome insurance in the UK is around £350 for an average 40 year old driver with a motorhome valued at around £40,000. Ultimately, every insurance company is different and has different rates, so it is important to shop around until you find the right motorhome insurance quote for you. As well as having a clean licence with no claims, adding additional security features can help reduce your insurance costs, these can include factory-fitted arms, wheel clamps and tracking devices.

To conclude, when choosing the right motorhome insurance, the main thing is making sure your policy fits your lifestyle.
